Life After Cable: Day 8

Posted in life after cable by - Nov 04, 2009

Just an episode of The Simpsons from Hulu. Sad episode. Reminds me why I stopped watching so long ago.

Got asked by Hulu if I wanted to watch the episode with normal commercials or with just one long commercial at the start. Since I was watching on an AppleTV I couldn’t click the radio button and got the long Honda commercial. I don’t necessarily oppose that idea, although it wouldn’t be honest to say I’ll use that time to meditate on the virtues of the Honda corporation.

Wished I could watch V – even though I’m pretty sure it …

Life After Cable: Day 6

Posted in life after cable by - Nov 02, 2009

I’m skipping yesterday because a Halloween party absorbed my normal prime-time viewing opportunities.

Tonight Hulu through the AppleTV continued to be a spotty performer, but worked well enough for me to watch the Office episode from this week and a few episodes of Parks and Recreation. I liked the P&R episodes I saw. The Office is losing me, though. It’s hard not to feel like they’re running out of gas. Warm and fuzzy resolutions (marriages/consummations, promotions, etc.) are the sworn enemy of funny. Note to whoever decided Pam and Jim should get married and have an instababy – this is …

Life After Cable: Day 3

No TV at all today.

It’s strange to me too. I don’t go a whole lot of days without turning the TV on.

I guess on a normal Wednesday night I would have watched Glee, but I figured it might not be on Hulu right away so I didn’t bother to look. I finished a library book instead. I know how that sounds, but there’s a new 30 Rock on tomorrow. This can’t possibly last. I don’t think I’ll be going all “Flowers for Algernon” on anyone.

Good Hair

“Good Hair” is a thoughtful, nuanced take on a painful and complex topic. There are plenty of easy laugh lines that Chris passes up to get to the heart of his subject. I hope we’ll get to see him in a role like this again.

Life Without Cable, Day 2

Posted in life after cable by - Oct 28, 2009

So Tuesday isn’t historically full of stuff I have to watch. I’ve sort of planned to watch tonight’s Daily Show and Colbert Report in the morning. Tonight, I only watched a single episode from season one of Dollhouse. I’ve been told buy a lot of people that it gets better as it goes on, so I’m riding it out for a while. Right now, I could take it or leave it.

Watching older series on DVD, on the other hand, is something I can see myself doing a lot more of. The lack of commercials is great (although …

So when I first got laid off, I kept my rather extravagant cable package. It took a few months of unemployment for me to realize that it was time to let go.
