Quick Review: The Wolfman

Posted in movies by - Feb 22, 2010

I am not sure how this movie ended up so awful. The character is an evergreen, and the cast and crew for this movie seemed quite promising.

Sadly, except for a few uncharacteristic moments of action the movie is insanely boring. There is almost no reason to watch, as it doesn’t even qualify for so-bad-it’s-a-little-good. Somehow even Rick Baker turned in sub-par work here – Anthony Hopkins metamorphoses into the silliest looking werewolf on record. There is a sub-Twilight romance, a ludicrous father-son angle, and several characters so thinly drawn that you won’t be able to care about them …

Quick Review: Shutter Island

Posted in movies by - Feb 21, 2010

Shutter Island is not an easy movie to enjoy. I think that’s intentional, but that doesn’t make the experience any less unpleasant. It succeeds maybe a little too well in creating a grim and disorienting ambiguity between fantasy and reality that allows the viewer no relief or catharsis in either world.

Leo DiCaprio plays a US Marshall assigned to the peculiar case of an escaped prisoner on an island devoted to the criminally insane. He brings some baggage to the case – memories of WWII and its atrocities and even more painful memories of …

Quick Review – Youth in Revolt

Posted in movies by - Jan 12, 2010

It’s hard not to like Michael Cera, and liking Michael Cera is almost enough to make me like this movie. Almost, but not quite.

“Youth in Revolt” is a strange hybrid – part 80’s sex farce, part faux Wes Anderson whimsyfest. Unfortunately for the fine cast assembled here, the script never catches fire in either direction. While the film is generally amiable, the comedy set pieces are a little too far apart. If you’ve seen the trailers, you’ve seen all the belly laughs the film has to offer. What remains is a fairly standard “awkward teen comes of …

Quick Review: Sherlock Holmes

Posted in movies by - Dec 29, 2009

The reason I was excited to see “Sherlock” was primarily the trailer, which has been showing for a few months now. I mean, I know it’s a return from exile for Guy Ritchie. I’m a fan of the Holmes character, and of Robert Downey, Jr. But I got myself geeked on the droll, steampunky movie trailer.

I should know better than to do that. The dark art of making masterful trailers for mediocre films has become so advanced that none of us should for a moment mistake the map of “Coming Attractions” for the territory of cinema. But I …

Quick Review: Avatar

Posted in movies by - Dec 18, 2009

This movie is going to make a squillion dollars. It has everything you need for a blockbuster: aliens, magic, and funky interspecies lovin’. It’s even got mechs, for Pete’s sake. It also has a Captain Planet-level pro-environmental and anti-imperialist message that is likely to earn it some attack cycles on the Fox News Channel, which will probably help with promotion.

Visually, the movie impresses, albeit in a very mushrooms and prog-rock way. It’s a Yes album cover brought to life. There are floating cloud-mountains and screaming dragonbirds. Nearly 100% of the flora is groovily bioluminescent. The rainforest …

Life After Cable: Two Months On

Posted in life after cable by - Dec 17, 2009

I’m pretty surprised to say this, but the most remarkable thing about my TV consumption these days is how little has changed. I watch about the same amount of TV, and at the moment there isn’t much that I’m missing, and I’ve done very little cheating of any kind.

I’ve really come to enjoy watching series that I missed through the Netflix streaming service. I recently went through the entire first three seasons of “Friday Night Lights” in HD in just a week or so. My ISP may not dig how much streaming bandwidth I’m using, but the convenience …
