Life After Cable: Two Months On

Posted in life after cable by - December 17, 2009

I’m pretty surprised to say this, but the most remarkable thing about my TV consumption these days is how little has changed. I watch about the same amount of TV, and at the moment there isn’t much that I’m missing, and I’ve done very little cheating of any kind.

I’ve really come to enjoy watching series that I missed through the Netflix streaming service. I recently went through the entire first three seasons of “Friday Night Lights” in HD in just a week or so. My ISP may not dig how much streaming bandwidth I’m using, but the convenience is hard to beat.

I also notice that the Netflix movies I get in the mail don’t stay around nearly as long now, which I guess is a good thing. I didn’t always take full advantage of the service – I’m trying to do better now.

My biggest fear was missing things. It turns out I see things a day or so late sometimes, but I don’t miss anything that’s really bothering me. I think if I cared about live sporting events it would be a much bigger deal, but I don’t have that gene. Also, if I was a stickler for pristine audio and video quality, streaming wouldn’t be an acceptable solution. Fortunately, I’m easy that way too.

The AppleTV I use for streaming net video to my TV is a little slow and choppy, and I’m thinking seriously about replacing it with a netbook or the new Boxee set-top box that’s coming out in Q1 of 2010. I think I can justify the expenditure because I’m saving about 150 dollars a month in cable costs.

I guess I’m ready to call this experiment a success. There are enough ways to get most of the content I care about online, and the money I’m saving is significant. If you’re thinking about cutting out cable, and you can live with some short delays and a little lower image quality (in some cases) it’s probably worth a try.
