Upstream Color

I don’t know what to say about this movie.

It’s not that I’m afraid to spoil it, mind you. Upstream Color is unspoilable. I could tell you every single thing that happens and you would still need to see the movie just to get to the level of confusion I’m on.

Upstream Color is one of those Terence Malick-style cinematic tone poems, and if you’re not a fan of that style of filmmaking, you’ll quickly find yourself gasping for air. It includes twee, indulgent lines like this:

“I have to apologize. I was born with a disfigurement where my head is made of the same material as the sun.”

Just not too many. There are also long stretches of the movie where no one speaks. There are portentous images that appear seemingly at random.

The thing is, I liked it. I left the theater thinking I missed more than I saw, and I felt that I would probably have to see it a few more times to make all the pieces fit together.

If you’re in the mood for a brooding headscratcher, it’s worth seeing. Of course, future viewings could reveal that I was imagining all that depth, but it’s an accomplishment of sorts that I even care to find out.
