Review: the Bourne Legacy

So, the first thing that you need to know is that this really isn’t a Bourne movie. And I’m not saying that just because Matt Damon is no longer in the franchise. I’m saying that because this has stopped being thriller series about spies and amnesia and it’s become a superhero series – albeit about a superhero with a very limited set of powers.

The previous Bourne movies are focused on a spy whose only supernormal abilities come from training, swagger and krav maga. The Jeremy Renner version is built around a spy who has genetic superpowers. Somehow his handlers have beefed up his genetics through the introduction of a virus. This makes him faster than everyone, more tolerant of pain, even smarter. He is even immune, apparently, to motivation.

In supercharging their hero, the filmmakers have removed what pathos was left in the series. The new spy is not trying to reassemble a fractured identity. He remembers how he got here. He signed up willingly. He’s not trying to true up the scales of justice, either. He simply does not want to lose his new abilities.

Without the hook that made me root for Jason Bourne, this movie quickly degenerates into a numbing series of action sequences, culminating in a boring boss fight with another virally created Superman.

I’d say skip it, unless you really love motorcycle chases in heavy traffic that last about a week.
