Netflix Mining – Delhi Belly

Posted in movies by - January 15, 2012

First of all, Delhi Belly is slang for severe gastrointestinal distress. Spoiler alert – this affliction does occupy a central space in the narrative. You might want to think of this as kind of an Indian entry in the ‘Bridesmaids’ genre of sweet, silly, gross-out flicks. The language is pretty harsh for Bollywood (but very funny), the gastro gags are pretty disgusting (but also sort of funny) and the violence is cruel and out of left field a bit (but also quite funny).

The movie concerns some 3 slacker roommates who are approaching the age where having a bunch of roomies starts to get stale. Through a series of bubble-gut driven coincidences, the trio get themselves in trouble with a local gang. In their efforts to escape with their lives, they also come to terms with impending adulthood. It’s like a Farrelly brothers movie that’s also funny. Or a Jackie Chan movie minus 80% of the corny. Just watch it.

As a bonus, you also get to meet ‘Disco Fighter’ – a deeply strange and wonderful character worthy of his own movie. I don’t think it’s actually being made, but it should be.

Disco Fighter kind of kills it.
