Quick Review: "Extract"

Mike Judge's new movie "Extract"

I’m a big fan of Mike Judge, and I will confess that I entered the theater with high hopes.  “Office Space” is a classic – the most insightful skewering of late 20th century tech drone life that a mainstream film could possibly offer. “Idiocracy”, while less polished, brims with funny and prescient ideas and deserves the cult status it received.

Extract will not become a cult hit.  It likely will not even become a regular hit, despite a stellar cast, a Labor Day weekend and throngs of movie fans who’ve had just about enough Sandra Bullock. Extract is going to fade quickly into a pretty well-deserved oblivion.

It’s not really funny in any sustained way, although chuckle-worthy lines occasionally punctuate the tedium.  It’s a limp comedy about class that lines up squarely behind the overdog and is entirely devoid of likable characters.  Here’s hoping Judge is back to form next time out. For this one, wait til it’s on Starz – you won’t be waiting long.
