Quick Review: Cyrus

The reason to see this movie is Jonah Hill. Don’t get me wrong – Thomas C. Reilly and Marisa Tomei are quite good, and the chemistry between them is delightful. Catherine Keener is a first ballot hall-of-famer. But Jonah Hill is the creepy, funny center of this movie and he does amazing things with it.

Telling you the plot won’t do it justice. Sad-sack midlife crisis victim Reilly is coping with his ex getting remarried by moping and acting like an ass. Marisa Tomei somehow finds his brokenness attractive. In the process of stalking his new girlfriend he meets her 21-year old son, Cyrus. Cyrus doesn’t think his mom needs another man in her life, and sets out to make sure she doesn’t.

The rest of the movie is a restrained, uncomfortable and tender dissection of the mother-son relationship and Reilly’s attempts to ingratiate himself into the family. It’s funny, and it’s painful, and it’s surprisingly satisfying. It’s like watching an American Pie-style sex comedy without the resulting shame spiral. I recommend it.
