Quick Review: The Losers

As a movie, “The Losers” is mediocre, but it has the makings for a fairly exciting video game. I would be more than happy to play this movie on my Xbox, but it’s a waste of time to watch this motley assortment of hams play it out on screen. The dialog that would be so clever in an FPS falls flat here, and the various characters behave like especially inscrutable video game AI.

There is a lot of shooty, explosiony stuff here, and it’s shot well. It’s clear that the director wanted the source comic’s style and energy on the screen, and the effort is not entirely wasted. That said, if you’re prone to motion sickness, avoid “The Losers” at all costs. The entire movie is edited in what I am going to call “Seizure-Vision.” The editing is so choppy that I had to fight the urge to score some Ritalin on the walk home. There has to be a better way to generate visual intensity than cutting the movie to shreds.

It’s not the worst film I saw this week, but it doesn’t have any particular performance or plot twist to recommend it. I’d suggest waiting until some rainy afternoon when you can’t find anything else interesting in the RedBox.

Confidential to Zoe Saldana: You’re better than this crap. Fire your agent. Same for you, Idris Elba.
